TNT Logistics North America recently obtained a contract to manage an automotive facility in Kansas City, Mo., designed to handle finished cars, trucks and other production passenger vehicles from more than 20 Ford Motor Co. manufacturing plants in the United States and Canada.

"The operation essentially functions as a giant cross-dock for mixing and merging rail cars, as well as automobiles within rail cars," said Todd Pye, TNT Logistics manager of rail sector business development, in a prepared statement. "The objective is to switch and build trains of finished automobiles that all have the same rail hub as their destination."

At the facility, TNT Logistics plans to employ 165 people, who will process more than 600,000 automobiles destined for 50 ramps each year.

TNT Logistics has been awarded a number of contracts by railroads over the years to manage auto ramp operations, inbound transportation, equipment transportation and sequencing, locomotive fueling and service, rail-car cleaning and warehouse handling.
