Arizona Eastern Railway, BLET reach tentative labor pact

The Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen has reached a tentative five-year labor agreement with the Arizona Eastern Railway (AZER). If ratified, it would become the first union contract for the railroad.

AZER workers voted to join BLET in June 2024, BLET officials said in a newsletter. Ballots are due Aug. 12.

The tentative agreement would establish a seniority roster with prior rights protections, grievance procedures and union protection from discipline, guaranteed work weeks with rest days, a new promotion process for engineers, a formal training process, paid personal time off and safety improvements. The contract would also provide general wage increases to employees and a signing bonus.

Genesee & Wyoming Inc. owns AZER, which operates 206 miles of track between Clifton and Miami, Arizona, and interchanges with Union Pacific Railroad.
