Genesee & Wyoming's carloads fall in 2010's first month

In January, Genesee & Wyoming Inc.’s (GWI) traffic totaled 63,862 units, down 9.8 percent compared with January 2009 volume.

Coal, coke and ores traffic declined primarily because of lower volumes in the Rocky Mountain and Illinois regions; farm and food products traffic decreased, mainly in the Australia Region due to temporary shipment delays for the 2009-10 South Australian grain harvest; and pulp and paper traffic dropped, predominantly in the Canada and Southern regions. All other traffic increased by a net 120 carloads, GWI said.

The company owns and operates 62 regionals and short lines in the United States, Canada, Australia and the Netherlands.
