NTSB opens docket for CPKC derailment in North Dakota

The National Transportation Safety Board this week opened the public docket for the investigation into a July 2024 derailment of a Canadian Pacific Kansas City train near Bordulac, North Dakota.

On July 5, 2024, the train derailed 29 rail cars on the main line of the Carrington Subdivision. The derailed equipment included 17 tank cars transporting hazardous materials. A post-accident release of methanol and anhydrous ammonia from multiple tank cars and a subsequent pool fire surrounding the derailed cars occurred.

No reports of initial injuries were made, according to the accident report contained in the docket. CPKC estimated damages to total about $3.6 million.

As a designated key train, its maximum speed was restricted to 50 mph. An automatic emergency brake application was initiated at the time of the derailment. Train movements near the derailment site are authorized by wayside signals.

The NTSB’s investigation is ongoing. Future investigative activity will focus on detailed tank car damage assessments with the parties involved, review of maintenance and inspection records, additional infrastructure examinations, and further examination of the onboard image recorders and post-accident unmanned aircraft system videos.
