CSX to remove three New York rail bridges in spring, Sen. Schumer says

U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) on Friday announced CSX Corp. has awarded a contract to construction company C.P. Ward Inc. to remove three abandoned and "graffiti-ridden" rail bridges in Ogden and Spencerport, N.Y.

Last month, Schumer sent a letter to CSX officials urging them to remove the "unsafe and deteriorating structures," the senator said in a prepared statement.

CSX plans to first begin work on a bridge in Spencerport, with work to follow on the other two bridges in Ogden. Pending permit approvals, the Class I might start the work in spring, Schumer said.

The bridges are a safety concern because several times commercial trucks have become lodged under the structures, causing traffic delays and "stifling the flow of commercial goods and customers to the town's business district," the senator said.

"The Union Street bridge in Spencerport, and the Manitou and Washington Street bridges in Ogden have impeded traffic, blocked businesses delivery trucks, and inhibited emergency and maintenance vehicles access for far too long," said Schumer.
