CSX releases latest ESG report

CSX this week released its 2024 Environmental, Social and Governance report, which highlights the railroad's advancements in safety, service, sustainability and stewardship. The report shares achievements made in 2024 in the four categories, company officials said.

The report details how CSX is addressing climate change, supply chain management, hazmat and emergency preparedness, labor rights, customer service, employee and community safety, and employee health and well being.

In the safety category, CSX reported that it achieved the following:

  • rolled out its SAFE CSX program, logging over 54,000 training hours;
  • shipped nearly 6.3 million units of freight;
  • recorded its lowest number of lost workdays in CSX history; and
  • trained over 8,200 community first responders and law enforcement personnel.

In service, CSX reported that the company:

  • distributed $664,000 from its employee disaster relief fund to 194 employees;
  • logged over 550 projects in the industrial development pipeline and added 16 new rail-served properties to its Select Sites program;
  • increased total volume year-over-year by 2%; and
  • contributed $17.8 million and over 24,000 volunteer hours to communities.

CSX reported the following achievements in sustainability: 

  • trained workers for the transition to hydrogen locomotives;
  • reduced CO2 emissions for CSX customers by over 10 million tons;
  • achieved fuel efficiency of 0.976 gallons/kGTMd, leading the Class I railroads in efficiency; and
  • advanced the recovery of its Blue Bridge subdivision which was damaged in Hurricane Helene flooding.

Finally, in its stewardship category, CSX shared that it: 

  • achieved completion of 100% of its ethics training by management employees; 
  • received its highest net promoter score for customer since 2021; and
  • donated $1.04 million through employee and director matching, dollars for doers and board service grants.
