CSX has completed the transition of three diesel engines to hydrogen-powered units, with a fourth to be completed later this year, at its locomotive shop in Huntington, Virginia.
The Huntington team is repurposing essential components such as cabs, frames and traction motors. The reused parts extend the lifespan of the locomotives while supporting CSX's commitment to sustainability, company officials said yesterday in a press release.
CSX unveiled its first hydrogen locomotive in 2024 as part of a partnership with Canadian Pacific Kansas City.
Hydrogen technology offers a cleaner alternative to diesel, emitting only water vapor and providing greater energy efficiency. The Huntington locomotive shop is at the forefront of CSX’s efforts to push boundaries in rail technology while achieving its environmental goals, company officials said.
