The railroad relocated the facility from Beacon Park Yard in Boston to Westborough as part of an agreement with the commonwealth to strengthen its freight- and commuter-rail network, Murray said in a prepared statement.
"By strategically planning the relocation of the TRANSFLO facility ... we are opening up opportunities for improved freight services while supporting businesses in the MetroWest region, commonwealth and across New England," he said.
Twice as large as the former Boston TRANSFLO, the $20 million Westborough facility receives bulk shipments of commodities such as corn syrup, plastic pellets and industrial products by rail and transfers them to trucks for delivery to local and regional businesses. CSX built the facility on the existing footprint of its former automotive terminal.
The Class I and commonwealth have agreed to expand freight- and commuter-rail service in Massachusetts. To accommodate expanded commuter-rail service on the Worcester-to-Boston line, CSX and its affiliates are relocating several facilities from Beacon Park Yard, including intermodal operations that will be housed at an expanded facility in Worcester. The Class I also plans to expand its intermodal facility in West Springfield.
"This is an example of how we can work together to better improve freight rail within the commonwealth and beyond," said Lisa Mancini, CSX's senior vice present and chief administrative officer.
