RailComm lines up railroads to access train-control system through Software-as-a-Service option

RailComm Inc. has added two Genesee & Wyoming Inc. short lines to its customer list for the Domain Operations Controller (DOC®) train-control system.

The Portland & Western and Illinois & Midland railroads recently signed long-term service agreements to access DOC® through a Web-enabled Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) delivery model.

The short lines are the first RailComm customers to use the SaaS model, under which the service provider houses information in its data center and provides dispatching, centralized train control (CTC), and remote-control train, power switch and other functions through the Internet. The SaaS delivery model reduces the need for local information technology support, according to RailComm.

Currently using a General Code of Operating Rules-based dark territory control system, both railroads plan to add the DOC® CTC control application.
