BNSF Railway last week deployed its first solar- and wind-powered weather station.
Located in Haslet, Texas, the station operates without commercial power and supports real-time weather monitoring across the rail network, BNSF officials said in a social media post.
The station records wind speed, temperature, humidity and other key metrics, which helps dispatchers respond to changing conditions.
In addition to the solar-and-wind-powered station, BNSF maintains a network of wind stations across its 32,500-mile network that measure wind speeds, wind direction, air temperature, humidity levels and other metrics, according to the railroad's website.
Those stations send wind warnings to dispatchers in the railroad's Network Operations Center who notify train crews in affected areas. Crews in the field also have hand-held anemometers they can use to measure the wind.
