Puget Sound & Pacific Railroad Co. (PS&P) might be reaping carload benefits within two years from a new high-tech sawmill.

Anderson, Calif.-based Sierra Pacific Industries plans by year-end to begin building the sawmill on a 45-acre site in Junction City, Wash.; the 131-mile short line would serve the plant, according to PS&P corporate parent ParkSierra Rail Group's Spring/Summer 2001 newsletter.

To service the sawmill, PS&P would need to reactivate a 6,600-foot rail spur from its mainline to the site, which now houses two sawmills. The short line is trying to obtain funds from the county of Grays Harbor to help pay for the rebuilt spur.

Sierra Pacific plans to begin operations sometime in 2003, culling timber from local tree farms.
