Maryland Transit Administration announces grant availability for local transit

Yesterday, Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) officials announced the availability of $5.25 million in grants for transportation services that connect welfare recipients and low-income individuals to employment, and for the expansion of transportation options to people with disabilities.

The Federal Transit Administration’s (FTA) Job Access and Reverse Commute (JARC) and New Freedom programs award grants through an application process with the MTA. The JARC programs fund transportation services that connect low-income individuals to job opportunities, while New Freedom programs fund transportation options for people with disabilities. About $3 million in JARC grants and $2.25 million in New Freedom grants will be available for fiscal years 2014-2015, MTA officials said in a prepared statement.

The MTA awards grants to nonprofit organizations, state or local governments or operators of public transportation services.
