NS to begin Michigan trackwork next week
Starting April 16,
Norfolk Southern Railway is scheduled to begin trackwork in Michigan that will result in the restoration of normal travel times on Amtrak’s Wolverine and Blue Water routes by May,
Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) and
Amtrak officials recently announced.
While NS crews work to eliminate the temporary “slow orders” the Class I imposed on March 15, certain trains will be canceled or employ different schedules, or Amtrak will cover certain segments by motor coaches, Amtrak and MDOT officials said in a prepared statement.
NS imposed the order to slow passenger trains to 25 or 30 mph on certain track segments to accommodate the infrastructure repairs. MDOT has been working with NS to restore normal track speeds up to 79 mph in advance of the state’s purchase of much of the line, a transaction that is expected to be completed later this year.
