Bombardier lands $720 million worth of commuter-rail-car, freight locomotive orders

Bombardier Transportation announced May 2 that it had received about $720 million worth of equipment orders, including a significant rail-car order from one of New York City’s commuter railroads.



New York City’s Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) ordered 352 M-7 electrical multiple unit (EMU) commuter-rail cars for about $600 million. The new M-7s will replace the electric commuter-car fleets for LIRR and Metro-North Railroad, both Metropolitan Transportation Authority commuter railroad agencies. Since 1999, LIRR has ordered 678 M-7 cars from Bombardier.



The M-7 stainless-steel carbodies will be manufactured at Bombardier's La Pocatiere, Quebec, plant; final manufacturing and assembly, at Bombardier’s Plattsburgh, N.Y., facility.



Also, Trenitalia (Italian State Railways) ordered 42 electric locomotives (Class EU11) from Bombardier for about $120 million. The multipurpose EU11 cab be used to pull both passenger coaches and freight wagons; at Trenitalia, the EU11s will be homologated for freight transportation, and to operate at a maximum speed of 87 mph (or 140 kilometers per hour).



Since 1999, Trenitalia has ordered from Bombardier 240 3.5 MW electric locomotives (Class E464), and 20 dual-voltage, 6MW electric locomotives for cross-border traffic (Class E412).



Several Bombardier sites will participate in the EU11 design and production: Vado Ligure, Italy; Wroclaw, Poland; and Mannheim, Germany.
