Woman of Influence in Rail

Lisa Hoekenga

Associate VP & director of rail bridges, structures
Michael Baker International

Job history: When Lisa joined the firm in 2015, she identified a gap in the company's rail bridge capabilities. As a result, she established the firm's rail bridges and structures group, initially hiring two new graduates and growing the team to more than 20 professionals nationwide. She was promoted to associate VP in 2024.

Why she's influential as a leader: With over 20 years of experience and a master's degree in civil/structural engineering, Lisa has combined technical expertise with leadership to make a lasting impact on her organization and the rail sector at large. One example is her creation of the rail bridges and structures group.

Her leadership style is people focused. During the pandemic, she turned the challenges of remote work into opportunities. Today, her advocacy for remote work has enabled the group to recruit top talent from across the country.

Beyond her managerial responsibilities — which includes overseeing $7.5 million in projects — Lisa is a mentor and advocate for professional development. She encourages her team to attend and present at industry conferences, supports succession planning, and promotes a culture of knowledge sharing. She is active in AREMA, where she mentors emerging professionals, serves as secretary of Committee 8 and volunteers for the Conference Operating Committee.

Outside the workplace, Lisa promotes STEM careers through school outreach, volunteers at career days and has held leadership roles in the Women in Transportation Seminar (WTS), including serving as chapter president and regional representative.
