Great Lakes Transportation shuffles regionals' management decks (2/28/2002)

Great Lakes Transportation LLC (GLT) has made several managerial changes at subsidiary railroads Duluth, Missabe & Iron Range Railway Co. (DM&IR) and Bessemer and Lake Erie Railroad Co. (B&LE).

The holding company, which also owns and operates USS Great Lakes Fleet Inc. and The Pittsburgh & Conneaut Dock Co., late last year offered the railroads' managers a limited voluntary early-retirement program while GLT officials examined the regionals' work processes, leading to some personnel shifts.

At 450-mile DM&IR, GLT Manager-Human Resources Ted Frase was named director of administration and human resources; Manager Maintenance Planning James Persons, director of operating systems; John Raiha, manager of safety (a new position); Train Rules Examiner and Quality Manager James Rohweder, superintendent-operations, replacing Frederick See who retired; and Superintendent-Car Michael Urie, chief mechanical officer.

Meanwhile, at 355-mile B&LE, Engineer-Maintenance of Way Steven Bender was named chief engineer; Manager Maintenance-Locomotive Gordon Lloyd, manager-purchasing and materials; and Senior Manager Maintenance-Car Donald Muscarella, superintendent-mechanical.

Company officials believe the staff changes will create a leaner management structure, improve communication, speed decision-making and enhance GLT's ability to compete.
