Canadian National Railway Co. is branching out — both geographically and organizationally. Yesterday, The Class I announced it formed wholly owned subsidiary CN WorldWide, which will offer international freight forwarding services between Europe and North America beginning later this month.

Based in Rotterdam, Netherlands – home of the world’s largest non-Asian container port — CN WorldWide will schedule and manage door-to-door international shipments moving via rail, truck and water, and provide port handling, warehousing, customs and billing services.

The company initially will focus on freight moving between Europe and Eastern Canada via the Port of Halifax. CN WorldWide plans to begin forwarding freight between Europe and the United States at a later date.

“CN WorldWide … will allow CN to offer shippers an integrated, door-to-door freight service, and position us to drive new containerized traffic through CN-served ports in North America,” said James Foote, CN executive vice president of sales and marketing, in a prepared statement.

CN named Anita Ernesaks managing director of CN WorldWide. A graduate of CN’s Railroad MBA program, she previously served as vice president of eBusiness.
