Today, Trinity Industries Inc. announced Union Pacific Railroad increased its recent order of 64-foot refrigerated box cars from 500 to 1,500.

Trinity Rail Group and UP jointly developed the cars, which are designed to contain up to 40 percent more cargo compared with a typical refrigerated car and preserve temperature-sensitive food products.

UP plans to use the cars for its growing Express Lane perishables service, which the railroad operates jointly with CSX Transportation. Launched in April 2000, Express Lane offers guaranteed service from the Pacific Northwest and California to the Midwest and East Coast.

"We worked closely with Trinity Rail to develop a rail car that will combine lower costs with higher performance to support this very successful product," said UP President and Chief Operating Officer Ike Evans in a prepared statement.

With the order, the car builder's backlog has grown to more than 13,000 units in North America and Europe, said Trinity Rail Group Chief Executive Officer Mike Flannery.
