Today, Burlington Northern Santa Fe and Ferrocarril Mexicano S.A. de C.V. (Ferromex) announced a partnership through which the railroads would operate an integrated carload service crossing the U.S./Mexico border at El Paso, Texas.

By crossing the border in El Paso, BNSF and Ferromex officials believe they can offer shippers a more-direct route for carload traffic moving between major Western U.S. and Mexico markets, and better transit times.

"This service provides a truck-competitive alternative for customers," said Richard Miller, BNSF assistant vice president, Mexico business, in a prepared statement.

The railroads initially would move select forest-product commodities, including scrap paper, lumber, plywood and particle board.

BNSF and Ferromex plan to offer dock-to-dock prices, which would include all services associated with a shipment, such as the cost of BNSF's and Ferromex's moves, and car hire within Mexico.
