Progressive Railroading: November 2017
Cover Story:
The MTA New York City Transit Second Avenue Subway Project
The first phase of MTA New York City Transit's Second Avenue Subway finally opened in January on Manhattan's East Side after decades of debate, financing struggles and construction starts and stops. For NYCT, the opening was a long-sought solution to reducing at least some of the subway system's congestion.

Progressive Railroading reviews the construction project, restarted in 2007, that has been described an engineering feat.
Special:
Jack Hellmann, Progressive Railroading's 2017 Railroad Innovator Award Winner
In June, Progressive Railroading announced that Genesee & Wyoming Inc. (G&W) President, Chairman and CEO Jack Hellmann was the 2017 recipient of our Railroad Innovator Award. Hellmann will receive the award at Progressive Railroading's RailTrends® conference (Nov. 30-Dec. 1).

During Hellmann's 17 years with G&W, the company has grown from 21 railroads to 122. G&W's eight North American regions serve 41 U.S. states and four Canadian provinces. G&W also has a significant presence in both Australia and the U.K. And Hellmann continues to expand G&W's footprint. Editor Pat Foran recently visited G&W's headquarters in Darien, Connecticut, to talk with Hellmann about his life and rail career, the evolution of both G&W and the short-line industry, and his take on the rail world at large.
