Vehicle dynamics is a key issue for today’s railways in a number of important areas: operational safety, vehicle and track maintenance costs, and vehicle acceptance. Modern simulation softwares enable the users to accurately simulate the dynamic behavior of locomotives, wagons or entire trains. However, vertical track stiffness, which is a key component affecting the vehicle dynamics, is usually not included in simulations and analysis due to the unavailability of the data. This session will focus on:

The method of measuring vertical track stiffness from a moving car
Vertical track stiffness’s effects on vehicle dynamics using the simulation software
Case studies demonstrating scenarios where track
stiffness variations significantly affect vehicle dynamics performance
