The South Florida Regional Transportation Authority (SFRTA) on Sept. 16 will increase the Tri-Rail commuter-rail service to include 35 weekday trains and 18 weekend trains as ridership ticks up.

The amended schedule will allow for more frequent service during peak hours, with four-car train sets to allow social distancing. Three-car train sets will run during off peak times.

“With Palm Beach County schools reopening soon and our daily ridership continuing to increase, it makes sense to introduce more trains into the schedule,” said SFRTA Executive Director Steven Abrams in a press release.

The new schedule will mark the third incremental adjustment to Tri-Rail service since the agency first reduced its service in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Meanwhile, Tri-Rail is gearing up to reinstate fares starting Oct. 1. Fares were suspended on March 28.
