Rail Experience: Hanigan's career reflects the full arc of railroad infrastructure delivery — from concept and investigation through design, construction support, emergency response and long-term program execution. Within Olsson's rail sector, Hanigan serves as the primary contact point for emerging Class I clients. He oversees delivery of services and establishes key connections throughout the firm to facilitate project execution. Hanigan's technical depth is anchored in railroad structures, with design experience spanning capital bridge/span replacements, deck replacements, critical repairs, emergencies and capacity improvement projects. Since 2014, he has contributed to more than 1,500 railroad projects.

Mentorship Role: Hanigan has been active in Olsson's Mentor Match program, investing time in structured one-on-one relationships that help early-career professionals translate technical education into real-world rail consulting practices. Through these mentor pairings, he supports growth in practical engineering judgment, quality expectations, professional licensure and project management. Hanigan helps mentees understand why railroads make certain decisions and how to succeed within rail's processes and operational constraints.

Beyond Olsson, Hanigan is involved with the American Council of Engineering Companies Emerging Leaders program, which includes a mentor-mentee component. Hanigan also contributes to the rail industry talent pipeline as a liaison for the University of Nebraska–Omaha and Lincoln AREMA student chapters. In this role, Hanigan helps students understand what railroad engineering looks like in practice, highlighting the opportunity, complexity and benefits of a rail career. His engagement strengthens students' readiness for internships and entry-level roles, and supports AREMA's mission of advancing railroad engineering knowledge.
