Rail Experience: Bowen started her 25-year career in highway engineering, but an early career opportunity to work on a rail yard project shaped the trajectory of her career. In 2010, Bowen managed a major expansion project at Norfolk Southern Railway's Bellevue Yard in Ohio, a complex initiative that showcased her ability to manage challenging operational and technical constraints. Since then, she has played a pivotal role in growing and shaping Michael Baker International's Rail Practice. In her current role, Bowen is responsible for strategic growth, client engagement and the multidisciplinary teams delivering rail corridor, yard and infrastructure projects nationwide. She has been involved in the American Railway Engineering and Maintenance-of-Way Association since 2014, is a current member of the AREMA Conference Operating Committee and chaired Committee 14 between 2022 and 2024.
Mentorship Role: Within Michael Baker, Bowen identifies high-potential engineers and provides them with stretch assignments on complex freight-rail projects, pairing technical development with exposure to project management, client interaction and leadership responsibilities. She advocates for her mentees, sponsors them for expanded roles and ensures they gain visibility with senior leadership and clients. Beyond individual mentor-mentee relationships, Bowen has deliberately built pathways, opportunities and inclusive environments that develop talent and strengthen the long-term rail workforce. Through the founding of Michael Baker's Women's Engagement Network, Bowen helped establish a formal structure for mentorship, leadership development and sponsorship. Outside of her firm, Bowen is a founding member of the Women's Transportation Seminar's Northeast Ohio chapter, in which she has mentored members through career transitions, leadership development and entry into the rail industry, while also encouraging participation in regional and national leadership roles.
