Rail Experience: Vonashek has held leadership roles focused on rail operations, safety and regulatory compliance at several major commuter-rail systems throughout his more than 20-year career. He first joined Metra in the greater Chicago area as a transportation specialist and progressed through multiple roles, ultimately becoming director of regulatory compliance. In 2014, he joined Keolis Commuter Services, where he led safety programs, security planning, emergency preparedness and regulatory compliance for the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority commuter-rail system. Vonashek joined MTA Metro-North Railroad in 2016 as vice president of system safety. He was promoted multiple times to increasingly higher operational roles until his 2025 appointment as president. Beyond Metro-North, Vonashek is active on American Public Transportation Association committees and through Operation Lifesaver Inc. as a board member and technical advisor.

Mentorship Role: Throughout his career, Vonashek has focused not only on improving operations and safety, but also on helping employees grow, learn and advance their careers. He has created several leadership and mentorship programs at Metro-North that continue to shape the organization today. He launched the "NXT Leadership" program, which identifies high-potential employees and helps prepare them for future leadership roles. Program participants build leadership skills and strengthen operational knowledge while gaining exposure to senior leadership and the skills needed to move into management positions.

Vonashek also created Metro-North's Operations Management Development Program, which provides operations employees with structured training and cross-department experience, and a Corporate Leadership Team program that aims to improve communication and coordination for middle management.
