STB invites public to observe first open-voting conference

Surface Transportation Board Chairman Roger Nober wants the board to conduct its business in the public eye rather than behind closed doors.

Although he's been chairman a little more than a month, it didn't take Nober long to get the open-door ball rolling.

On Jan. 14, STB announced plans to hold an open voting conference Jan. 30, at which board members will publicly discuss and vote on several pending cases.

"There's the perception that STB isn't open and public enough," said Nober during a Progressive Railroading interview Jan. 8. "My goal is to have the board conduct its business in a public way, with more voting and testimony done in public."

Although the public is invited to attend, no public participation will be allowed at the conference.

The board plans soon to provide the docket numbers and titles comprising the conference's agenda.
