New York allocates funds for freight-, passenger-rail projects


On Tuesday, New York Gov. David Paterson announced the state will provide more than $42 million for 34 rail and port capital improvement projects. The funds will be distributed as Renew and Rebuild New York Transportation Bond Act grants or provided through the Governor's Passenger and Freight Rail Assistance Program.

Renew and Rebuild New York Transportation Bond Act grants include:
• $4.2 million to the Capital District Transportation Authority to upgrade a passenger-rail station in Schenectady;
• $3.15 million to the Buffalo and Pittsburgh Railroad Inc. to install new ties on a 50-mile segment between Buffalo and Machias;
• $2 million to the New York Susquehanna & Western Railway Co. to improve track along the Syracuse Mainline, and extend a connector track and construct a yard in Binghamton;
• $1.9 million to the Finger Lakes Railway Corp. to rehabilitate about 46 miles of track;
• $1.8 million to MTA Long Island Rail Road to expand capacity at Maspeth Yard;
• $1.8 million to the Niagara County Department of Economic Development to build 2,800 feet of track, relocate an existing grade crossing and rehabilitate other track to provide rail access for Globe Metallurgical Inc.;
• $1.75 million to the Port of Oswego Authority to rehabilitate and reconstruct a section of pier and install a new fender system;
• $1.55 million to the New York City Economic Development Corp. to replace an existing locomotive with an environmentally friendly model at the New York Container Terminal in Staten Island;
• $1.35 million to the Rochester & Southern Railroad Inc. to rehabilitate seven miles of track;
• $1.2 million to the Owego & Harford Railway Inc. to construct a run-around track at Owego yard and improve infrastructure to accommodate heavier rail cars; and
• $1 million to the Massena Terminal Railroad to resurface eight crossings and rehabilitate three miles of track to accommodate heavier rail cars.

Passenger and Freight Rail Assistance Program grants include:
• $3.9 million to the Genesee County Economic Development Corp. to extend short-line service to the new Genesee Valley Agri-Business Park;
• $2.7 million to the New York & Ogdensburg Railway Co. to replace ties and rail, rehabilitate two bridges and improve two crossings;
• $2.25 million to the Buffalo & Pittsburgh Railroad to rehabilitate the Buffalo Creek yard;
• $1.8 million to the Clarendon & Pittsford Railroad Co. to install more than three miles of rail;
• $860,000 to the Falls Road Railroad Co. to replace ties along their entire 45-mile route;
• $770,000 to the Batten Kill Railroad Co. Inc. to repair a bridge in Greenwich;
• $500,237 to the Finger Lakes Railway to replace rail and improve drainage;
• $525,000 to the Mohawk Adirondack & Northern Railroad Corp. to rehabilitate a culvert; and
• $375,000 to the Depew Lancaster & Western Railroad Co. to upgrade a bridge over Tonawanda Creek to accommodate heavier rail cars.
