China's Guangzhou Metro orders more metro cars from Bombardier-led joint venture

Guangzhou Metro Corp. recently placed an additional $71 million order with Bombardier Transportation-led joint venture Changchun Bombardier Railway Vehicles Co. Ltd. (CBRC) for 48 MOVIA metro cars. Guangzhou Metro plans to use the eight six-car trainsets on its No. 1 and 2 lines.

The modular trains will feature gangways between cars, IGBT propulsion, micro-processor controls, and high-power air conditioning and passenger information systems.

Bombardier's share of the contract is valued at about $20 million. The joint venture plans to build the trains at CBRC's northern China plant. Bombardier will supply some of the bogies, and propulsion and control systems from its European facilities.

Deliveries are scheduled to begin in first-half 2006. After delivery is completed at the end of 2006, Bombardier will have supplied more than 1,000 of the cars to Guangzhou Metro.

Bombardier now has obtained two orders in China this month. On Oct. 15, the company and its joint venture Bombardier Sifang Power Transportation Ltd. received an order for 20 eight-car high-speed trainsets from the Ministry of Railways.
