CSX Transportation recently presented a $10,000 award to two Florida short lines to recognize the small roads' efforts to attract industrial development to their lines and generate more carloads.

The 64-mile Florida Central Railroad Co. Inc. and 37-mile Florida Midland Railroad Co. Inc. tied for the first place award, according to the American Short Line and Regional Railroad Association.

CSXT recognized Florida Central Railroad for building a 20-car loading/unloading facility designed to accommodate used trucks and autos moving to and from Florida Auto Auction in Winter Garden, Fla. Completed in mid-2003, the project was funded by the auction, city, CSXT and a state grant. (For more information on the project, see page 72 of Progressive Railroading's September issue.)

The Class I honored Florida Midland Railroad for locating a Lowe’s "Flatbed Distribution Center" on its line in Frostproof, Fla.

In January 2003, CSXT created the award program to provide its small road partners an incentive to increase annual carloads. The Class I compares year-over-year carload figures for a 10-month period to determine a winner, which receives the award at CSXT's annual short-line and regional workshop in Jacksonville, Fla.

Florida Central and Florida Midland railroads are owned an operated by Pinsly Railroad Co., which also controls the 58-mile Arkansas Midland Railroad Co. Inc., 27-mile Florida Northern Railroad Co. Inc. and 17-mile Pioneer Valley Railroad Co. Inc.
