CenterPoint Properties proposes logistics park, intermodal facility in suburban Chicago

On March 19, the Crete, Ill., board will vote on whether to annex land into the village for an 850-acre intermodal logistics park proposed by developer CenterPoint Properties.

To be located near CSX Transportation and Union Pacific Railroad lines, and off State Route 394 in suburban Chicago near Crete, the park would include a 550-acre intermodal facility, and up to 5 million square feet of warehouse and distribution space. The intermodal facility would be designed to handle 1 million lifts annually.

Crete officials already have approved zoning for intermodal, distribution and rail-served industrial uses, and a conceptual plan for the project, says CenterPoint Properties Marketing Manager Matthew Tramel. The developer is trying to reach a deal with CSXT and UP under which one or both of the Class Is would lease the intermodal facility.

CenterPoint Properties plans to begin building the logistics park in fall. The intermodal facility is scheduled to be complete in fall 2008 and begin operations in 2009.

CenterPoint Properties managed the construction of UP’s Global III intermodal facility in Rochelle, Ill., which opened in 2003, and developed BNSF Logistics Park-Chicago in Elwood, Ill., which includes a 770-acre intermodal facility that opened in 2002.
