Reading, Blue Mountain & Northern to provide service on coal shipper's Pennsylvania line

The Reading, Blue Mountain & Northern Railroad Co. (RBMN) recently filed an exemption notice with the Surface Transportation Board seeking to provide service on a five-mile line recently rehabilitated by Locust Valley Coal Co.

Running between Delano Township and Mahanoy, Pa., the line had been out of service since 1976. RBMN recently reached an agreement with the coal shipper to operate the line after Locust Valley upgraded the track. The 317-mile short line plans to begin operations after Jan. 1.

Formed in 1983 and based in Port Clinton, Pa., RBMN primarily moves coal for eastern Pennsylvania shippers. The short line also moves paper, lumber, plastics, fertilizer, stone, sand, road salt, brick and fly ash.
