KCS records quarterly, yearly gains

Kansas City Southern Jan. 31 reported fourth-quarter income from continuing operations of $11.1 million, rising 208 percent compared with $3.6 million in fourth-quarter 2000 due to higher domestic operating income, lower interest expenses and a $2.2 million equity earnings increase from Transportación Ferroviaria Mexicana S.A. de C.V.
KCS’ quarterly revenue also increased by $10.7 million, or 8 percent, while operating expenses dropped $2.8 million compared with the same 2000 period.
Meanwhile, the railroad’s fourth-quarter operating ratio improved to 84.7 compared with 92.7 in 2000’s last quarter.
For 2001, $31.1 million in income from continuing operations increased compared with 2000’s $25.4 million. KCS’ operating ratio for the year was 88.2, virtually the same as 2000’s 88.3.
