Collaboration, innovation key to rail's growth, Canadian transport minister says

Canadian Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities Chuck Strahl recently recognized rail’s continuing importance to Canada's economic future during a roundtable discussion in Ottawa, Ontario, on Rail 2030, a Railway Association of Canada project designed to develop a common vision for rail. The roundtable included representatives from railroads, shippers, ports and intermodal terminals.

Partnerships and collaboration are vital to fostering transportation research and spurring rail, which is a key part of the North American supply chain and global trading network that stretches to and from Europe, Africa, Asia and South America, said Strahl.

“Our vision is of a future integrated transportation system that is sustainable, competitive, safe and secure, serving the needs of shippers, passengers and all Canadians,” he said.

Innovation — including ongoing research by Transport Canada — must play a role in transportation growth to continue aiding the economy, Strahl believes.

“Investing in the right technologies, research and business strategies will provide a competitive edge by improving efficiency, reliability and sustainability,” he said.
