Rail News: Rail Industry Trends

Genesee & Wyoming realigns North American operating regions



On Jan. 1, Genesee & Wyoming Inc. (GWI) officials will be doing more than ringing in the new year. They’ll be ushering in realigned and rebalanced North American operating regions.

Today, the short-line holding company announced it’s creating a new Southern Region comprising 13 railroads that formerly were part of the Rail Link Region and a new Rocky Mountain Region comprising Utah Railway, Contract Coal Loading and operations in the Powder River Basin, Colorado, Illinois and Ohio that previously were part of industrial switching and port operations.

In addition, GWI is shifting the Tomahawk Railway from the Rail Link Region to the Illinois Region and reconfiguring the Rail Link Region to include industrial switching and port operations, the Commonwealth Railway, First Coast Railroad, Georgia Central Railway, Riceboro Southern Railway and York Railway Co. All changes take effect Jan. 1.

GWI appointed Senior Vice President-Rail Link Billy Eason to head the new Southern Region and Bill Jasper to head the realigned Rail Link region and succeed Eason. Jasper most recently served as VP of operation services.

“The value of our regional structure is its responsiveness to customers and business opportunities in each of our operating units,” said GWI Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Mortimer Fuller III in a prepared statement. “This realignment reflects our focus on maintaining these advantages.”

GWI owns and operates regionals and short lines in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Australia and Bolivia.
