CSXT's Sanborn, UP's Duren are 'Women Worth Watching,' magazine says

Two high-ranking female Class I executives recently received recognition as a “Woman Worth Watching” by Profiles in Diversity Journal magazine. The publication honored 124 female executives whose organizations nominated them as exemplary leaders.

The magazine honored CSX Transportation Vice President and Chief Transportation Officer Cindy Sanborn, the first woman to hold the CTO position at CSXT. In an essay she wrote for the magazine, Sanborn — who joined CSXT 23 years ago — noted the importance of working for a company whose corporate culture aligns with her own personal values.

“Upholding an ethical standard is the right way to get results, and living this tenet has helped my career progress in a meaningful way,” she wrote.

“Developing and sustaining a strong, diverse organization is essential to achieving our business objectives. Cindy is a leader in the company who is committed to attracting and retaining top people, and the excellent results that come from that approach,” said David Brown, CSXT's executive vice president and chief operating officer, in a prepared statement.

The magazine also honored Union Pacific Railroad VP and General Manager-Chemicals Diane Duren. She began her career as a certified public accountant prior to joining UP, then held various finance and marketing positions during her 25-year railroad career.

“I learned a long time ago that you can accomplish very little by yourself in the business world and to be successful, you must be part of an effective team,” said Duren.
