Transportation improvements a high priority in southern California, regional council says

With more than 5 million people expected to move to southern California and regional freight traffic projected to triple in the next 20 years, transportation infrastructure needs to be improved, according to the Southern California Leadership Council (SCLC).

To draw attention to the region’s transportation needs, the council recently launched a public education campaign. Council members expect the campaign to help identify ways the region can keep pace with projected growth.

SCLC also supports two measures on the November ballot that address transportation needs. Proposition 1A wouuld require the state motor vehicle fuel sales tax to be used only for transportation improvements. Proposition 1B, a $19.9 billion bond measure, would help the state improve highways, freeways and local roads, reduce air pollution and improve port security.

“Shifting our freight and goods movement from trucks to rails is one huge step in solving the highway transportation crisis southern Californians face,” said SCLC Executive Director Lee Harrington in a prepared statement.

Founded in 2005, SCLC is a business-led public policy partnership that aims to promote a strong economy, vital business environment and better quality of life in southern California.
