Three European rail groups hold 'green' side event at U.N. Climate Change Conference in Poland

Representatives from the International Union of Railways (UIC), Community of European Railway and Infrastructure Companies and International Association of Public Transport are attending the United Nations’ annual Climate Change Conference for the sixth time. The event is being held Dec. 9-15 in Poznan, Poland.

In addition to conducting a joint exhibition at the conference, the three parties have organized a side event on transportation’s role in climate change in cooperation with the United Kingdom’s Transport Research Laboratory and Germany’s Deutsche Gesellschaft für Technische Zusammenarbeit.

Held earlier this week, the side event featured several transport and climate change experts who support the inclusion of rail and public transportation in U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change discussions. Rail and public transport organizations long have promoted the importance of transportation in climate change efforts and their contribution in future sustainable transportation systems, the UIC said.

Next year, the U.N. Climate Change Conference will be held in Copenhagen.
