Maryland Transit Administration to test trains on double-tracked line

Next week, Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) will begin testing light-rail trains on a recently installed second track between the North Linthicum and Cromwell stops, including a Baltimore-Washington International Airport spur.

Tests will continue through November, then MTA will resume regular service on the line in December. The agency closed the line in February to begin the double-track project between Camden Yards and Cromwell. At June’s end, MTA restored service from Camden Yards to North Linthicum.

Once the project is complete in 2006, almost 90 percent of MTA’s system will be double-tracked. Officials expect the second line to reduce delays and improve access for maintenance crews.
