Public transportation campaign to air before President Bush's State of the Union address

A little more than a month before Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century is set to expire, transportation officials are kicking reauthorization campaign efforts into high gear.

Tomorrow, American Public Transportation Association (APTA) will launch a national advertising campaign designed to demonstrate how public transportation benefits individuals and communities. Entitled "When people thrive, communities thrive," the television ad will air on CNN and Fox News prior to President Bush’s State of the Union address Jan. 20.

During the first week of February, APTA also will run print ads entitled "How would that affect you" in Time, Newsweek and other publications.

APTA is working with other transportation organizations through the American Transportation Mobility group — led by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce — to advocate increased transportation funding.

"Passing a new transportation bill that increases public transportation funding should be a top priority for Congress," said APTA President William Millar in a prepared statement. "Public transportation strengthens America’s communities by stimulating the economy and creating jobs."
