Twin Cities' Met Council names Slawik chair
Nora Slawik was sworn in this week as the new chair of the Metropolitan Council in Minnesota's Twin Cities.
The former mayor of Maplewood, Minnesota, Slawik succeeds Alene Tchourumoff, who stepped down in November 2018.
In addition to serving five years as Maplewood's mayor, Slawik earlier served seven terms as a legislator in the Minnesota House, representing Maplewood and Oakdale.
She accepted the new position because she believes in the council's work and mission, Slawik said in a press release.
"From housing that is affordable, a modern transit system, equity and opportunity for all, land planning, wastewater, and world-class parks, the council plays a huge role in our region’s economic competitiveness and community prosperity," she said.
The Metropolitan Council is the regional policy-making body, planning agency and provider of essential services — including public transit — for the Twin Cities region. The council oversees Metro Transit.
