Bombardier/Alstom consortium receives $247 million order from German railway

Germany’s Deutsche Bahn recently awarded a $247 million contract to a Bombardier Inc./Alstom LHB consortium to supply 60 additional four-car regional trains.

Bombardier will provide propulsion equipment, bogies, interior fitting, electrical equipment, final assembly, testing and commissioning; Alstom will build the car bodies at its Salzgitter, Germany, plant.

The class 423 electrical multiple-unit vehicles will replace class 420 vehicles currently in service on the S-Bahn line. The cars weigh 30 tons less than class 420 cars, which saves on propulsion energy, according to a prepared statement.

Delivery is expected to begin in May 2004. Bombardier already has delivered more than 300 class 423 vehicles to the German railway.
