Massachusetts measure would provide funding for quiet zones

Last week, Massachusetts’ Joint Committee on Transportation held a public hearing to address several bills, including a transportation measure proposed by state Sen. Karen Spilka.

The bill would help municipalities create quiet zones to reduce train noise in residential areas by providing funds for grade crossing upgrades. The measure proposes that the state cover up to half of the total cost to build structures needed to establish quiet zones. The funding program would create safer crossings for motorists, pedestrians and railroads, Spilka said in a prepared statement.

She urged the committee to report the bill to the full state Senate as soon as possible.
