TRANSCAER names winners of national emergency response achievement awards

Safety
TRANSCAER on April 4 announced the recipients of its 2012 National Awards Recognition Program, which honors efforts by individuals, companies and organizations to improve transportation safety, enhance community assistance, and advance emergency response planning and aid.

TRANSCAER — or Transportation Community Awareness and Emergency Response — is a voluntary national outreach program that aims to help communities prepare for and respond to potential hazardous materials transportation incidents. TRANSCAER is sponsored by the American Chemistry Council, Association of American Railroads (AAR), CHEMTREC, The Chlorine Institute, The Fertilizer Institute and Renewable Fuels Association.

The 2012 National Achievement Award winners are: BNSF Railway Co.; CN's Dangerous Goods Team; Canadian Pacific; CSX Transportation; DANA Transport Inc.; The Dow Chemical Co.; Norfolk Southern Railway; Tanner Industries Inc.; the Renewable Fuels Association; and Union Pacific Railroad.

The recipient of the Chairman's Award — a special discretionary honor bestowed by the national TRANSCAER task group chairman — is Timothy Butter, the deputy administrator of the U.S. Department of Transportation's Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration.

TRANSCAER also announced that the Torch Award winners are NS' William Oertly and CN's Art Vesterfelt. The award recognizes individuals "whose legacy leaves a lasting impact" on the program," TRANSCAER officials said in a press release.

In addition, TRANSCAER announced that 66 people will receive Individual Achievement Awards for helping to advance the program's principles.

TRANSCAER plans to present the awards at the American Chemistry Council's Responsible Care® Conference and Expo to be held May 5-8 in Miami and the AAR/Bureau of Explosives's Hazardous Materials Seminar slated for May 21-23 in Dallas.
