WMATA to begin transit-oriented development at West Hyattsville station



Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) plans to give the neighborhood around its West Hyattsville Metrorail Station a facelift. The authority recently selected a developer to build residential, retail and office space near the Prince George, Md., facility.

Centex Homes and Gunston Hall Realty will build 459 mid-rise and 300 high-rise condominiums, 65,000 square feet of retail space and 200,000 square feet of office space. The joint venture also will construct a 600-space parking facility — which WMATA will own and operate — to replace the existing 453-space park-and-ride and 131-space kiss-and-ride lots.

Under the project’s first phase, Centex/Gunston will build townhomes and condominiums on an 18-acre parcel it owns and a 10-acre parcel it plans to purchase west of the Metrorail tracks. The second phase includes leasing 17.5 acres to the east of the tracks to build office and retail space, and more condos.

Centex/Gunston’s plans for the station fit into the West Hyattsville Transit Oriented Development Strategy, developed by the Maryland Department of Transportation, Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, city of Hyattsville and WMATA.
