Transportation Services Index registers second-straight monthly gain in April

In April, the Transportation Services Index (TSI) of 111.7 rose 0.1 percent compared with March — the fourth month-over-month increase during past six months, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS).

The April TSI also rose 2.8 percent and 13.7 percent compared with April 2004 and April 2000 (a base year), respectively.

The Freight TSI of 112.6 increased 0.1 percent compared with March, also representing the fourth gain during the past six months. In addition, the index rose 1.6 percent compared with April 2004.

Meanwhile, April’s Passenger TSI of 109.3 went up 0.1 percent compared with March — the second-straight monthly increase, BTS said. The index also rose 5.6 percent compared with April 2004.

During a six-month period ending in April, the TSI, Freight TSI and Passenger TSI rose 2.1 percent, 2.2 percent and 1.9 percent, respectively, compared with the previous six-month period.

The TSI is a measure of month-to-month changes in the output of services provided by for-hire transportation industries, including rail, air, truck, inland waterways, pipelines and local transit.
