Shippers bestow service awards to NS, CSXT

Norfolk Southern Corp. March 19 announced a service-achievement trifecta: The Class I recently received awards from three shippers recognizing its 2001 service quality and customer-service performance.
NS was the only railroad named a Pro-Tec Coating Co. "Outstanding Service Supplier." The Class I transports coiled steel to Pro-Tec's Leipsic, Ohio, plant.
Steel Dynamics, too, presented NS an award for service excellence. The railroad moves product for the shipper's flat-roll division in Butler, Ind., which produces hot-rolled and cold-rolled steel for automotive, construction, commercial and industrial applications.
Finally, NS received a Quality All-Star Award from General Motors Vehicle Logistics recognizing the railroad's performance in achieving logistics quality goals for 2001.
Meanwhile, CSX Transportation March 19 was presented the Rail Carrier of the Year Award by Air Products and Chemicals Inc., a combined gas and chemical producer.
The award, which recognizes a carrier that shows the most shipping-performance improvement, is part of Air Products yearly Vendor Challenge Program for its rail carriers based on the shipper's October-to-September fiscal year.
Air Products selects several key shipping lanes for each railroad and monitors performance versus schedule, including on-time performance versus schedule and goals, using the prior year's performance as a baseline. The award is given to the railroad showing the greatest improvement.
In 2001, CSXT achieved an error-free rating of 90.73 percent, improving in one year from a ranking of fourth out of six carriers to first.
