Senate appropriations subcommittee approves $1.4 billion for Amtrak, billions for FTA and FRA

Earlier this week, the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Transportation, Treasury, and Housing and Urban Development, The Judiciary, District of Columbia approved a $69 billion fiscal-year 2007 spending bill.

The bill includes $1.6 billion for the Federal Railroad Administration, $84 million more than the FY2006 funding level and $510,000 more than that Bush Administration’s request. Of those funds, the committee appropriated $1.4 billion for Amtrak — $500 million more than the administration’s $900 million request and $200 million less than Amtrak’s FY2007 request.

The subcommittee also approved $8.8 billion for the Federal Transit Administration (FTA), a $342 million increase compared with FY2006. The appropriation would fund grants for transit planning and research, fixed guideway modernizations, capital investments and new starts.
