On-site customs coming soon to Genesee & Wyoming's Maine terminal

Genesee & Wyoming Inc.'s (GWI) Auburn, Maine, intermodal facility is a step closer to obtaining status as a U.S. Customs inspection station.

The U.S. Customs Service recently announced plans to include the facility in the port limits of Portland, Maine, which would designate the terminal an inspection station.

On-site customs will enable GWI subsidiary St. Lawrence & Atlantic Railroad Co. (which serves the facility) to increase the facility's international business though five ports served by connecting Class I Canadian National Railway Co., said Robert Grossman, GWI executive vice president, government and industry affairs, in a prepared statement.

Two steamship companies currently process 1,400 international containers at the terminal, which handled more than 13,000 (mostly domestic) containers last year.
