Norfolk Southern installs Hall as VP of intermodal operations, gains approval to upgrade crossings in Ohio

Norfolk Southern Corp. has appointed Jerry Hall vice president of intermodal operations to succeed Robert Huffman, who plans to retire on Feb. 1. Hall will report to Executive VP and Chief Marketing Officer Donald Seale.

Most recently general manager of the Northern Region, Hall joined NS as a management trainee in Hattiesburg, Miss., and progressed through numerous positions in the transportation department, including superintendent of the Dearborn, Harrisburg and Lake divisions.

A 40-year rail industry veteran, Huffman joined the Penn Central Railroad as a block operator in 1972. He later served Conrail as assistant trainmaster in 1975, then held positions of increasing responsibility in the railroad's operations department. Huffman joined NS in 1998 as senior assistant VP of intermodal operations and became VP of intermodal operations in 1999.

"Bob brought a wealth of experience and a lot of great ideas to our intermodal operations," said Seale in a prepared statement. "His contributions will be missed, and we wish him the best in his retirement."

Meanwhile, NS also will improve eight grade crossings in Ohio after the projects were green lighted by the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio. The commission approved construction authorization from the Ohio Rail Development Commission directing NS to upgrade the crossings in Miamisburg.

The projects involve the installation of flashing lights and roadway gates, and circuitry upgrades and modernization work.

The projects must be completed by April 23, 2014. Funding will be covered by federal dollars.
