Honolulu transit officials receive first steel shipment for rail project

The Honolulu Authority for Rail Transit (HART) recently marked a milestone when the first 3,000 tons of steel rail for Honolulu's new elevated line arrived in Oahu.

The rail was manufactured in Pueblo, Colo., using sustainable practices, including a finished product produced in part from recycled steel, HART officials said in a prepared statement.

"We had the opportunity to lock in the price for all of the rail for the project and were were able to get a good price so the fluctuation or rail prices in the future will not affect us," said HART Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer Dan Grabauskas.

A total 13,000 tons of rail and other track-related materials will be needed to complete the 20-mile elevated rail system that will connect East Kapolei with Ala Moana Center. About 140 miles of track will be installed, including track running in each direction and a third rail used to power the system, as well as turnouts along the route and track for the maintenance yard.

Other track-related materials include 8,700 tons of steel running rail, 4,300 tons of third rail, 15,000 concrete ties, 166,000 fasteners and 106 turnouts.
